There are many times as a blogger when you feel like you are screaming into the void. Thankfully, every now and then someone comes along to give you a much needed confidence boost.
Elena from Your Beautiful Journey gave me a huge boost lately when she nominated both my blogs for the Sunshine Blogger Award. (I also scribble down random thoughts and quotes here.) Thank you Elena for your profound kindness and continued support. It has motivated me to write a lot more recently.
I would also like to say that awards like these are a simple yet great way to support fellow bloggers. Blogging is a great way to share your passionate ideas and engage with like-minded individuals around the world. These awards also help spread the word about our favourite sites.
As part of the nomination, Elena asked me a few interesting questions. So without further ado, here are my answers:
What was the first book you read or the first book that made a real impression on you?
Morgan Llywelyn’s Brian Boru: Emperor of the Irish still is one of my all time favourite books. I have read this book many times since I first read it as a child in Primary School. When I first read this, I actually loved it so much that I borrowed it permanently from my classroom. (Still have the same copy today!) I think I love this book so much because it is a true story dealing with the last High King of Ireland. He rises from one of the youngest sons of a small tribal leader to become the most powerful man in Ireland. The story builds up to the Battle Of Clontarf where Brian leads the Irish to victory over the Vikings. This period of Irish history has everything which gives it elements of both the mythical and factual.
If you could spend a month in any place of the world, where would you go?
For culture, history, food, weather and pure natural beauty, it would have to be Italy.
If you could take any one person with you to this hypothetical trip, who would you take?
My beautiful wife of course!
Which one superpower would you want to have?
Time travel would be cool. I would definitely love to take a trip back to experience the Wild West. Then I would probably aim to capture a few iconic sporting and world history moments. Maybe catch a Leonard Cohen concert. I quite fancy the idea of time travel as presented in the 2013 film About Time.
How big a role do you think luck plays in achieving your dreams as compared to the importance of diligent effort?
Personally, I used to think that ‘hard work guarantees success’ but recently I have amended that to ‘hard work doesn’t guarantee success, but it does guarantee self-satisfaction.’ Luck (or the infinite possibilities of all things) definitely plays a part in our lives. There are many unseen forces at play in the background of our lives so we can only use what we have to the best of our ability and trust that things will eventually work out for the best. None of us can claim to be living the lives that we have exactly planned. But that is the real excitement of it all, the unexpected turns and twists!
What is the one most important dream you want to achieve in your lifetime?
I would love to publish a book and put something out there that will live a little bit longer than myself! Publish a book, quit the day job to be a full time writer, get a pet labrador, in that order!
Through trial and error, have you arrived at any lifehacks you would want to share about working towards your own goals in your free time?
I used to want to do everything. Learn japanese, play guitar, write novels, play sport, etc. I am only recently starting to understand that we cannot be world class or even ‘very good’ at everything. It is just not possible!
FightMediocrity has a great video on YouTube that summarises Gary Keller’s book The One Thing. I am currently listening to Greg McKeown’s brilliant book Essentialism and it echoes a similar sentiment.
Decide what your priorities are and stick to them! This creates more free time to do what you love and get better at it.
How do you think one person can change the world for the better?
First off, you cannot help anyone else if you don’t look after yourself first. Sleep, rest and life balance are so important so that you can be your best self. Once you have achieved this (and it isn’t easy!) you are in a great position to help others and contribute. Where you invest your love, you invest your life. If your passions involve supporting others in any way, you contribute to something bigger than yourself that can only change the world for the better.
Share your favourite recipe!
I love this easy-to-make, healthy-to-eat, delicious recipe. It is also a fantastic one to experiment with different ingredients and spices. Once you master the basic recipe there are an endless amount of directions that this dish can go in. I make it every Sunday evening for lunch and dinner early in the week.
What book/movie/TV series would you recommend to absolutely everyone and why?
Inception is my all time favourite film. I just love how it plays with our perception of reality. The soundtrack from Hans Zimmer is also amazing. I’ve only recently gotten into HBO’s Westworld and that is equally cool with a similar vibe.
Who and what are you grateful for?
I am grateful for every thing and every person in my life. Yes, both good and bad. Without them, I would not be the person that I am today nor would I have the opportunity to become so many other things. Special mention of course to my family and friends who support me through thick and thin.
Now it’s my turn to nominate some of my favourite blogs!
I could have picked out any amount of blogs that I love, but here are the eleven that I have most recently read or interacted with. My list of questions are below also. Even if I haven’t nominated you, I would love to hear some of your answers!
Here is my list of questions:
- If you could only bring one book with you to a desert island, what would it be?
- What music albums resonate with you?
- Where is your favourite place to walk?
- What is your routine when it comes to writing/blogging?
- Do you keep a diary/journal for ideas and general thoughts?
- Are you an early bird or night owl?
- Who would you recommend to follow on WordPress and/or Twitter and why?
- What was your highlight of 2017?
- What are you hoping to achieve in 2018?
- Are you a “grammar nazi” when it comes to writing and reading online?
- In your opinion, is eleven questions too much to ask or just the right amount?
Once again, thanks to Elena from Your Beautiful Journey for nominating me not once but twice! Check out her blog for some insightful post written with real heart. Elena, if you are reading this I would love to hear your answers to my questions too!
